Sonic’s Project Needlemouse character countdown ends in genuine shocker

Being a long-time Sonic fan can best be described through the analogy of a battered wife, who continues to return to her abusive husband year after year, under the pretense that “He’s changed”, and “It’ll never happen again” and “It’s only because I love you”, only to get brutally smacked to the floor with an ironing board. Again.

Depressingly apt comparisons to domestic violence aside, if you’re a Sonic fan, it might just be time to get excited again. Now yes, I know, the Sonic Cycle has perpetuated itself for many years now, and each time we’ve been left in varying levels of soul-crushing disappointment. But this time, THIS TIME, we’ve got an actual, iron-clad promise.

For the last week, Sega (via their blog) have been running a ‘character elimination’… thing… for the new and mysterious Sonic game, Project Needlemouse. They’ve systematically eliminated some of the more cancerous elements of the once-great series, right up until today, where we’re left with just one name. A name we should collectively run into the street and shout from the rooftops.

Here’s an actual, genuine quote that an actual, genuine Sega person wrote:

In Project Needlemouse, there will be no new characters – playable or otherwise. The focus will remain solely on one blue hedgehog.

It might be true, or it might all be happening again. I don’t know. What I DO know is that yet again, we’re going back to him, but this time, at least he’s taken anger management classes…

    I agree with Shnipah. Though, since Tails and Knuckles were never really on the list of ‘potential characters’, I guess that means that they’re already in the game, or that they weren’t even being considered.

    I hope Tails is in it, since he hasn’t been playable since Heroes/Advance 3. (And heroes barely counts)

    This game sounds cool and all, but one of the things I personally exjoy about the Sonic titles is the choice of characters (as seen in Sonic Battle, or the Advanced series). Each has different attributes which can be used ingame fb/fw. Just my opinion on that.
